About FaithBalance
Steve McCoy Thompson & Randy Haykin at work on this site
The FaithBalance.com site was created in 2008 by Randy Haykin and Steve McCoy-Thompson, who are based in Pleasanton, California. Randy and Steve are parishioners of Catholic Community of Pleasanton.
In 2001, Randy gathered a group of men, now affectionately referred to as "The Boys of Breakfast" (or "BoBs") to meet over breakfast and discuss issues related to Life Balance. Each of the original men noted that there were a wide variety of issues that concerned them including issues related to family, work, community and individual balance.
The group decided to meet regularly (every 2 weeks) and continues today. At present there are 19 active members in the group, but over the years, more than 35 members have come and gone. Guest speakers have ranged from the CTO of Intel, the US Ambassador to Bermuda, the founder of venture capital firm Interwest Ventures, and Sikh spiritual teacher Guru Singh.
In 2007, Randy and Steve approached Ave Maria Press to publish a book (Fuel: Catholic Men, Living the Faith: A Small Group Guide) that would help other groups of men learn how to form, maintain and nurish a strong local men's faith group. The book is the impetus for our website, FaithBalance.
In the future, we plan a series of books around the topic of life balance, faith and our plan is to broaden our focus to include both women and men, and to include Christian and non-Christian perspectives.
